We are overjoyed by the news that Brittney Griner, activist and WNBA star, will finally be returning to her family and loved ones after being unjustly imprisoned for 10 months in Russia. Brittney is a powerful advocate for marginalized people who has used her platform to speak out on police violence against people of color and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
We hope that Brittney’s ordeal will shine a light on how LGBTQ+ people of color are criminalized in countries all throughout the world, including here in the U.S. The global war on drugs has had a disproportionate impact on people of color. Over half of people imprisoned in the U.S. for drug-related offenses are Black or Latinx.
YWCA Greater Cleveland welcomes Brittney home.
